Saint Lucy (Santa Lucia)

It is know that Lucia was a martyr in Syracuse, Sicily around 300 AD.  She was the daughter of wealthy and noble parents.  She was a dedicated virgin who gave away her goods to feed the poor and refused offers of marriage.  On one occasion she tore out her eyes to discourage an admirer, but they were miraculously restored to her.  She was denounced as a “Christian” by a pagan suitor and was sentenced to prostitution but when the guards came to take her away she could not be moved.  Divine intervention saved her from being burned to death.  She is the patroness for the eyes. Her feast day is December 13th.
